The film ”The Sound of Music“ is one of the biggest film successes of the 20th century and a superlative phenomenon, which was made in 1964 by Robert Wise as a sketchy imitation of the story of the immigrant Austrian Trapp family. It was the most successful film of all time in the box offices between 1964 and 1972. Even today, television stations from Australia to Zimbabwe show the film regularly at Christmas or on New Years Day. What is especially peculiar about its success is that one of the most famous pieces of film history is almost unknown in Austria, its place of origin. When it reached the cinemas in Europe it completely flopped in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Salzburg, the film had to be removed from the programme after just three days.
”The Sound of Music“ is a sentimental American film, in a regional setting, in which Austria is depicted from a transatlantic point of view as romantic Austria. Three out of four American tourists in Salzburg state that the film is the main reason for their trip to Austria. Although the film doesn’t fit in with the Salzburgers’ own image of their history or culture, it is exactly this image which they present to their visitors. Three companies offer a ”Sound of Music Tour“ in Salzburg and transport in total approx 50,000 people annually to the various film locations. For the Trichtlinnburg project in Salzburg the artist Pia Lanzinger has conceptualised and organised a unique bus tour, as an adaptation of the typical Sound-of-Music-Sightseeing-Tour, which, however, will provide a behind the scenes view of this aspect of the tourist industry. Passengers will travel in a specially designed Sound-of-Music-Bus and will be shown clips from the ”Sound of Music Tour“, from which they will gain an insight into this legend, the way it has been characterised and marketed. Through this collage method the constructed worlds from ”The Sound of Music“ are on the one hand partially portrayed and on the other hand are disclosed and challenged. ”The Sound of Music“ is a model example of the phenomenon of ”imaginary geography“. Tourists, who often do not travel in real geographical and political areas, but in ”true fictions“, find the ”wrong conceptions“ confirmed in their heads by reality. Thus, the ”Sound-of-Music-city“ has been adapted to fit the conceptions of visitors from the USA and film enthusiasts from other countries – Salzburg is presented as what it should be and not as what it is.
