Opening: Fr, 12 April 2019, 7pm
In Borjana Ventzislavova’s film, And the Sky Clears Up (MAGIC RESISTANCE), five female protagonists perform magic spells in Vienna, mostly in sites renowned for events from the Nazi period. By documenting these different processes (and perhaps thus magnifying them), the film altogether acts as a plea for conjuring resistance to the current right-wing populism in the Western Hemisphere. The depicted individual ceremonies, none of which arise from dogmatism nor official religions, demonstrate the protagonists’ appeal to healing, empowerment and solidarity as symbolic and even actual political action.
