Trichtlinnburg Salzburg - LIGNA: Dispersed Tourists
Een Affeire Met De Stad / Linnajuhtum / Ein städtisches Abenteuer / An Urban Affair

Main Station Leipzig, June 22, 2003
A Radio Journey through Salzburg
Salzburg - Meeting point 11.45 a.m. at the Bürgerspital Saturday, 21st May from 12 to 1.30 p.m.

Tourism is the visible organisation of people who conquer space according to their objects of interest. They go in groups, often guided, through the city. They enter churches, photograph things, which seem interesting to them and visit souvenir shops. Through the eyes of the tourist, the city becomes a visual commodity, void of secrets. The radio ballet by LIGNA is the invisible organisation of radio listeners. Dispersed tourists wander around with portable radios and headphones through the city. Immersed in their occult engagement, they follow the suggestions of the radio programme for activities, which deviate from the usual tourist activities. They investigate how city space is turned into a commodity and try out other acquisitions of this space. If mass tourism tries to suppress all alienation and unexpected aspects of the journey or at least tries to go into the details of it, alienation returns as a sinister movement with the radio ballet in the tourist space.
”Dispersed Tourists“ is a radio tour through Salzburg for limitless listeners. It is not the attractions of the city, which interest them, but how the spectacular space can be changed through the dispersed constellation of the listeners. It is a journey in the unknown terrain of uncontrollable situations.

LIGNA
LIGNA comprises the media theorists and radio artists Ole Frahm, Michael Hüners and Torsten Michaelsen. They develop models of tranformed radio practice. They have been producing the call-in-show LIGNA’s Music Box at the Freie Sender Kombinat Hamburg since 1996 and arrange the music programme based on the listeners’ calls. With the radio ballet, they have created a form of intervening contra-public which has been received in diverse contexts – from international festivals like ”Theaterformen“ in Hannover, the Tanzquartier in Vienna and anti-globalisation activities.
