Annual Exhibtion 2012

The annual exhibtion 2012 of the members of the Salzburger Kunstverein is being curated by the Berlin based curator Manuela Ammer.

“Every wall is a door,” explained the artist Sol LeWitt in an interview in 2003. He addresses the fact that, in the making of art, principles and methods need to be abandoned when they become restrictive, that guidelines and rules lose their legitimacy when they hold you back.

“Every wall is a door,” however, can also be read more generally – as an acknowledgement of the productivity of ambiguities.

Where other forms of knowledge production seek answers, works of art often pose questions. Instead of definitude, clarity, and regularity, they rely on ambivalences, tensions, and contradictions. What appeared “closed” (images, objects, topics, events) is re-opened through a shift in perspective and made accessible to reinterpretation.

The exhibition is dedicated to this act of opening.

Curator: Manuela Ammer is a Berlin-based art historian, writer and curator. A research associate at the Freie Universität Berlin, she researches and publishes on theoretical questions related to contemporary art, with a special focus on feminist, conceptual, and performative practices.
