Nilbar Güreş exposes the essentialist requirements of authoritarian structures by methodically linking introspection and post-feminist paradigms in theatrical productions. Her thoughts on hegemonial systems are equally concentrated on social structures dominated by paternalism and an increasingly fear-ridden Western perception of Islamic cultural and religious communities and the changes within them. In the video ”Unknown Sports. Indoor exercises I/II/III“ the protagonists line up to undermine the repressive gender-specific rites and practices with athletic poses transferred to a gym setting. Nevertheless, differences between behavioral norms persist. The women drill freedom of movement, while the men actually practice it.
