Franz Kapfer

Franz Kapfer’s first artistic projects originated in and around Salzburg. In his photo series and performances, he looks at the issue of the contemporary body and sexuality in the context of male concepts of identity, family and Catholicism. His early performances and photo series deal directly with the tradition of performance art and body art in the 1970s from the perspective of the young male artist. Topical (male) body structures and ideals are worked on and displaced with the development of an alter ego and references to Christian iconography and ancient mythology.

The Salzburg exhibition was the first comprehensive survey of Franz Kaper’s work between 1991 and 2005.

Franz Kapfer, born 1971 in Fürstenfeld, lives and works in Vienna.
