1 Picture in Café

Ewa Dziarnowska & Romana Schiller

Ewa Dziarnowska and Romana Schiller were invited to show their work in the exhibition series in Café Cult #66.

Opening: 3 October 2014, 8 pm

The Polish dancer Ewa Dziarnowska is showing her video installation “The Very Voice of the Planet Itself.” The work is based on the melancholic practice of media-dancing and is an attempt to develop an idiosyncratic dance in which the body is displaced, virtualized, taken out of context and is about to vanish. The outlines of the body become porous and begin to dissolve. Flesh and blood disintegrate into moving material.

The starting point of Romana Schiller’s pictures is digital photographs of Salzburg’s historic district, which were exposed using cyanotype. Similar to classic photography, cyanotype is an exposure technique with typical cyan-blue tones. By mixing two chemicals, a photosensitive liquid is created that reacts to sunlight.

The connection of photographs with the cyanotype points to the old dispute between photography and painting, which is reified through what appears to be the painted application of the liquid and the, nevertheless, detailed depiction of the Salzburg Cathedral. The image is characterized by openness and randomness through factors like light, time, mixing ratio, application, etc. The main objective of this work is to challenge photography as a static medium that is true to detail and understand the spontaneous, random moment of applying the liquid as part of the artistic process.

Ewa Dziarnowska is a Polish dance artist who lives and works in Vienna and Berlin. In 2014 she completed her studies at the Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD) and received a scholarship at Tanzquartier in Vienna for the year 2014/2015. Her most recent choreographic works were shown at international festivals in Berlin, Hamburg, Gdańsk, and Salzburg. “The Very Voice of the Planet Itself” is her first video work.

Romana Schiller , born in 1988, lives and works in Salzburg. From 2008 to 2014 she studied textile design with Christa Pichler-Satzger and from 2009 to 2014 craft education with Alfred Gilow at Mozarteum University. Her work was recently shown in the solo show Musterbildungen II at the Galerie Kunstwerk and in the group show Miniatur Textil at the Galerie Aichhorn in Salzburg.
