Since the 1960s “occupying” has articulated civil society’s recurring demand for political or social change. In the Arab Spring, European Summer, American Winter, and the currently emerging Turkish Summer, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets and started offering all of their social, intellectual, and cultural resources. The occupied spaces now help make the fault lines of society as a “whole” visible, opening up a place for democratic assembly and negotiation.

In the focus of ORTung 2012 stood a closer look at the issue of “occupied,” or that which is seen as occupied – in its historical, political, economic, but also emotional variations. What does this mean in terms of today’s spheres of artistic activity? How can the reformulation of assigned meanings take place? Who defines if an activity is private or public and when does it become political? Which law enforcement agencies steer their transitions? Seven artists from seven countries were invited to Strobl – a supposedly idyllic tourist destination, far from the rhetoric of urban protest and visible conflict zones – to spend two weeks addressing these questions. The results will be shown in the exhibiton.

In 2012 the ORTung residency program was taking place in Strobl for the tenth time. Every year seven international artists are selected by a jury (Maren Richter, Hemma Schmutz, Astrid Wege) to participate in the two-week program funded by the Salzburg state government. As was the case in previous years, a loose thematic framework was defined with which the artists were invited to explore and research Strobl and the surrounding area.

Together with the exhibition a catalog has been published.
