24.09.–29.11.2009
Exhibition at CaféCult #41

Melanie Schiefer

Opening: September 23, 2009, 7 p.m.

Melanie Schiefer showed two of her pieces, “Ein Haufen Kinder” and “Schläft sie schon?,” created in 2004 and 2009, as part of the exhibition series in CaféCult #41.

In this work, Schiefer combined the old with the new. She painted over canvases, pictures created during her studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg in 2004, and adds motifs from her familial environment. In 2004, during the artist’s most intense painting period, color scheme and abstract shapes were fundamental elements of her pictures. In 2009 she has partially reworked the coloring in these pieces, using fewer and simpler colors and adding motifs from her childhood.

2009 Melanie Schiefer moved back to her birthplace, Sölktal, after living in Salzburg for 10 years. “Maybe these two pictures are symbols of a subconscious reflection on my days as a student as well as a link to where I am today. A metaphor for my desire to go ‘back to the roots.’ A wish to return home and find peace that could only develop through countless experiences and impressions far away from home.”

Melanie Schiefer, born in 1978 in Schladming, lives and works in Schladming. Melanie Schiefer studied art and craft education at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and is a founding member of the artists‘ collective, TRANSFORMER, which was formed during the 2007 project, “urban potentials.” Most recently she has participated in the exhibitions “Rund ist der Ball” at Galerie Ganghof in Berchtesgaden, “Tag der jungen Kultur in Salzburg” at Kollegienkirche, and “urban potentials” at Galerie 5020 in Salzburg.
