“Josef Dabernig’s films frequently deal with public spaces and settings whose purpose and function are not subject to doubt. In ‘Wisla’ (1996), the scene is a football stadium, in ‘Wars’ (2001), it is the dining car of an interregional passenger train — places with clearly defined functions that determine the progression of possible actions, gestures and routines expected by the characters. The actors in Dabernig’s films meet these expectations. They appear isolated, their actions unrelated and uninfluenced by the reality of their surroundings. Reduced to the essence of their (occupational) raison d’être, they behave as monads and thus as models in settings devoid of humanity.” (Kathrin Rhomberg)
Josef Dabernig, born 1956 in Kötschach-Mauthen (Carinthia), lives and works in Vienna.
