Megan Rooney: A lovely farewell

Our exhibition in the Great Hall with Megan Rooney has sadly ended now during lockdown. However we are delighted that she has recently been taken on for representation by Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery. Congratulations from all of us to Megan and the Ropac team!

The mural Big Sky Blooming in the Ring Gallery will be on view for a full year more, until February 6, 2022. We find this beautiful mural to be invigorating, inspiring and full of hope. Please come by once we are re-open.

Megan Rooney joins the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery

Thaddaeus Ropac is delighted to announce that Megan Rooney is joining the gallery.

We invite you to view an online presentation of her work, including three new paintings, alongside a video of the artist filmed at her studio speaking about her practice. Rooney will hold her first solo exhibition at Thaddaeus Ropac London in Autumn 2021. Her work has previously been shown in solo museum exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Toronto and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, and as part of the Serpentine Galleries’ Park Nights programme in London. Rooney’s work has also been presented in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris; a performance at the Venice Biennale; and LUMA Foundation, Switzerland, among others.

As artist-in-residence at the Salzburger Kunstverein in 2020, Megan Rooney was invited to design the Great Hall and the Ring Gallery. Together, these installations form the largest single presentation in the museum’s history, which will be on view throughout 2021.

An enigmatic storyteller, Megan Rooney (b. 1985, Canada) works across a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, installation, performance and language to develop interwoven narratives in her striking signature style. The subjects of her works are drawn directly from her own life and surroundings, while her references are deeply invested in the present moment. She addresses the myriad qualities of narrative, society, myth and the experience of the female body through a unique approach to colour, writing, poetry and performance. The body is a recurring element in her work and can be seen as both the subjective starting point and a final site for the layering of experiences explored through her practice.

Megan Rooney’s fascinating ability to tell stories and create a narrative is felt through the various media of her multidisciplinary approach. Always in flux, recurring characters speak to a narrative that is never fixed, the artist addresses urgent subjects of our time and presents each iteration of her work as part of her Gesamtkunstwerk.
— Hans Ulrich Obrist, Artistic Director, Serpentine Galleries, 2020

Megan Rooney’s complex and captivating paintings encourage the viewer to look beyond the surface and into a world of shifting forms and colours. Rooney works at a monumental scale in ambitious installations as well as on stretched canvases of human dimensions that are compelling in their subject matter. Her multilayered practice, embracing a range of artforms and media, is both inspiring and endlessly intriguing.
