October Talks: Lecture Performance & Book Presentation
Past, Present, Present, Past.

15 October 2020, 7pm
Past, Present, Present, Past.
Lecture performance & book presentation by Gernot Wieland.
Followed by a Q & A with Albert Wörtl, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, Salzburg.

Gernot Wieland is an artist who works with text, video and lecture-performances. He often combines historical events with apparently personal memories, whereby fact and fiction merge into one another. This results in complex narratives that, starting from a more private sphere, sketch the state of a society as if by chance. Overall his work is characterized by a poetic, often tragic-comic nature, involving an examination of personal and collective memory, as well as repressed memories.

In the lecture performance Past, Present, Present, Past, which was originally premiered at steirischer herbst in 2019, the artist compares the story of Jonah and The Whale with the repression often found in Austrian culture. At the same time, this work includes stories about Franz Kafka and Ingeborg Bachmann, fast food restaurants and the Bauhaus, adaptation and guilt, and pudding.

Before the performance Gernot Wieland will present his new catalogue, which was produced for his 2020 exhibition at the Salzburger Kunstverein. A part of this lecture performance is shown in the catalogue as a set of images. Followed by a Q & A with Albert Wörtl, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, Salzburg.

October Talks is supported by Stadt Salzburg and the Blaue Gans Art Hotel.
