Sunset Kino: Men Only?!

Wed, 22 July 2020, 9pm
Athina Rachel Tsangari, Chevalier, 2015, 105 min

Curated by Marina Fokidis (GR).

Similar (in sensitivity) to Fassbinder’s classic The Chinese Roulette, in which all the members of a wealthy and problematic Munich family find themselves accidentally in their holiday chateau playing a physiological guessing game, the film Chevalier by Athina Rachel Tsangari, evolves around gaming, antagonism, patriarchy and revelations. A fishing trip in the Aegean Sea among a sextet of friends becomes the perfect setting for a relentless contest of male dominance. Instead of bonding the six men who are related to each other personally or professionally set about playing a wild game that only the most macho can win. Tsangari sets up an ephemeral stage for liminal behavior. Yet, liminal in this film, does not allude solely to extremity but also to sometimes funny and human unpredictability.

Preceded by Artistique by Sifis Lykakis & Dionisis Kavallieratos (2005).
