OFF-Biennale Budapest is an international contemporary art event, and the largest civil, independent arts initiative in Hungary. Organized in 2015 and 2017, it has been a DIY biennial based on self-organization and a collaboration of artists, curators, cultural and civil organizations, scholars and students, among others. OFF-Biennale boycotts the Hungarian public art infrastructure: it does not apply for state funding and steers clear from state-run art institutions. The aim is to strengthen the local independent art scene, and to take part in the public discourse on urgent, suppressed issues. The next edition is scheduled for May 2020.
In this talk, Hajnalka Somogyi, leader of the project, will talk about the collective attempt to develop a sustainable para-institution in the context of a right-wing populist regime in Hungary.
