Institutional agendas: Solo exhibitions versus group exhibitions by Nicolaus Schafhausen

Nicolaus Schafhausen is the director of Kunsthalle Wien. After starting out as an artist, he took over as director of the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart. Nicolaus Schafhausen was director of the Frankfurter Kunstverein, curator at the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art in Helsinki (NIFCA), and founder of the European Kunsthalle. From 2006 to 2012 he ran the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. He has been strategic director of Fogo Island Arts, an initiative of the Canadian Shorefast Foundation, since 2011.

In 2007 and 2009, Nicolaus Schafhausen was the curator of the German Pavilion for both the 52nd and 53rd Venice Biennale. In 2014, he co-curated the 54th October Salon in Belgrade, he was a member of the curatorial team for the 6th Moscow Biennale in 2015, and he also curated the Kosovo Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.

Nicolaus Schafhausen will share some of his experiences in his current role at Kunsthalle Wien, including speaking to his recent exhibitions and projects there. His lecture will also touch upon his experiences working in the Austrian context.
