Lecture by Eva Grubinger

In her lecture artist Eva Grubinger will give an overview of her sculptural work from the last few years.

Earlier artwork by Grubinger reflected and commented on the early development of the Internet. However since the mid-1990s she has worked primarily in sculpture and installation. While her more recent work focuses on materiality and space, especially social space and how it impacts upon society, there remain concerns with the immateriality of the online world in her overall oeuvre.

Grubinger primarily focuses on recognizable objects, unsettling them via various strategies. She draws upon representations and associations from such diverse worlds as seafaring, history, architecture, the theatre of politics, and the recent history of art itself, particularly Minimalism and Conceptualism. As a sculptor she has worked, accordingly, in numerous different formats and materials. Typically Grubinger’s approach is to take subjects that are familiar, even to the point of an everyday “invisibility,” and alter their scale, context and material, often with attention to surfaces – for surfaces, and their deceptions, are a strong part of her interest – so that they register anew. As she works, the familiar comes to reveal not only itself but also subtle, often politicised workings on body and mind.

Eva Grubinger, born 1970 in Salzburg, lives in Berlin. Her works were shown internationally, a.o. solo exhibitons at Museum Abteiberg Mönchengladbach, Kiasma-Museum Helsinki, Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, ICA London. She also participated in many group exhibitions, for example at Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Taipei Fine Art Museum, Krannert Art Museum, Marrakech Biennale or Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art Rotterdam.
