A Painters Doubt: Lecture by Guillaume Fréchette

Lecture by Guillaume Fréchette, philosopher, Salzburg University. Followed by the catalogue launch of A Painter’s Doubt.

Phenomenology and aesthetic experience
Tue, 11 April 2017, 7 pm

Lecture will be given in German.

Like no other philosophical tradition, phenomenology and Austrian philosophy―thanks to their founders Franz Brentano (1838-1917) and Edmund Husserl (1858-1938)―contributed to our understanding of visual arts, and in particular to our understanding of the nature of aesthetic experience. In this lecture, Guillaume Fréchette will present some of the most important phenomenological analyses of the aesthetic experience, from Brentano to Husserl, Ehrenfels, Meinong, Witasek, Benussi, Arnheim, and to Geiger, Ingarden, and Merleau-Ponty. He will discuss the theoretical presuppositions of these analyses and will explain their significance in painting relying on a few examples.

Within the exhibition A Painter’s Doubt.
