This Way, Please Performance with Roman Ondák

Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 7 p.m.

Social rituals and everyday situations that hardly attract attention are the subjects of Roman Ondák’s work. He often includes his audience or specially hired individuals in his concepts, thus making them co-producers. He uses a wide variety of media such as photography, video, drawing, or sculpture. Seven protagonists participate in his performance at the Salzburg Kunstverein entitled ”This Way, Please“, their presence is a metaphorical allusion to the issue of taking time for oneself while visiting an exhibition. “Ondák’s pieces are often readable when they are not seen as works of art. More than that, he frequently uses art as a means to heighten our awareness of everyday life and situations in it that often cannot be readable, metaphoric, and poetic at the same time. ” (Igor Zabel)

Roman Ondák, born in 1966 in Slovakia, is among the most renowned contemporary artists. In addition to numerous international exhibitions, such as his 2008 show in San Francisco or the 2006 show at the Tate Modern in London, Ondák will represent Slovakia and the Czech Republic at the 53rd Biennale di Venezia. The artist lives and works in Bratislava.
