Trichtlinnburg Salzburg - Manuela Mitterhuber: Open art exchange
Een Affeire Met De Stad / Linnajuhtum / Ein städtisches Abenteuer / An Urban Affair

Salzburg:
Friday, 20th and Saturday, 21st May 2005, Bruderhof, 4 - 8 p.m.

With ”Open art-exchange“, Manuela Mitterhuber takes the power of definition in public space and initiates a ”temporary art-exchange“ between the civil and state public. ”A museum is a public place, but only for those who choose to be a museum public.“ (Vito Acconci)
The artist makes one of the empty business premises in Salzburg’s city centre into a public showroom which functions as an exhibition, office and reading room. The city’s residents and tourists will be asked to make themselves available for a public presentation during the two-day long ”art work“. In return the participants will receive a day’s free admission for the Museum der Moderne.
During the exhibition (20th and 21st May 2005) publications and texts, which discuss the public space and the city as an interface of social and economic and aesthetic structures, will be placed there, as a supplement to the exhibition. ”A space is public when it either maintains the public order, or changes the public order. A space is public, when […] its conventions, images, signs, objects become facts of life - they make a system of order in which everything is in its proper place […]. A space is public, on the other hand, when it functions as a public forum: its conventions, images, signs, objects are turned upside-down, or collided one with the other, or broken into bits, so that those conventions are de-stabilized […].” (Vito Acconci)
