Museum Debate 3
Museum on the Mountain, Museum in the Mountain, Salzburg Regional Museum of Modern Art versus Guggenheim?

Construction of the Museum der Moderne am Mönchsberg was scheduled to begin in the spring of 2001, yet no one seemed to have a clear idea about the museum’s substantive profile.
In the summer of 2000, City Council Member Johann Padutsch rekindled the fires of the ‘Guggenheim Debate’, which many believed had been extinguished ten years before. The issue attracted considerable public interest and involvement. It now appeared that the New York Museum of Modern Art was also interested in collaborating with Salzburg. The leading figures on both sides of the debate were invited to participate in this series of extensive discussions. The goal was twofold: to provide information about the most recent plans and to initiate dialogue between decision-makers and the interested public. What do the different existing concepts entail? How realistic are they? Can the two projects be combined?
