06.02.–20.04.2014
Main Hall

Anne Schneider

Opening: We, February 5, 2014, 7 p.m.

Anne Schneider’s sculptures are created in a process guided by hand, incorporating the reference to the body that is so important in the artist’s approach. In a cross between minimalism and arte povera, she develops her series of artifacts using “poor” materials like burlap, concrete, or foils. Careful and sensitive handling of the simple materials transforms the burlap sacks the artist uses. Sewn into wall hangings or filled with concrete, she creates sculptures with significant physical presence.

With the white wall hanging developed specifically for an end wall of the Main Hall in the Salzburger Kunstverein, the artist questions the definition of sculpture. The curtain fills the entire wall and continues onto the floor. Coated with white paint, the surface retains its rough and hairy structure and folds and buckles in three dimensions. It stands, hangs, leans, and lies – just like bodies in a room. As an antithesis, the artist designs an “apsis” with sack shaped molds of poured concrete. The combination of the individual elements defines a private space – a “room of one’s own,” whose derivation from sacral or sepulchral architecture remains noticeable. “Standing sculptures,” foil paintings, and the body, which is defined as a “daybed,” complete the exhibit as an experiential space between implement, painting, and sculpture.
