(Bert Camem on From Symptom to Syndrome, a cycle of installation pieces by Siegfried Zaworka, 2013)

Siegfried Zaworka has established a strikingly independent position in recent years. His concept of painting goes far beyond the conventional boundaries of the medium. In his work painting is understood spatially, used as a backdrop, and confronted with musical experiments.

His latest works include installation elements that leave a lasting symbolic impression and whose differentiated painted surfaces keep the eyes occupied. The individual pictorial elements refer to organic objects (eggs, sausages, sweets, vegetal pieces, etc.) that are monumentalized and abstracted, appearing as archaic symbols. At the same time, the pictorial elements analogize with basic compositional shapes like the circle or oval.

What the symbols stand for – how they want to be read – ultimately remains undetermined. Do they affirm or negate the pleasure in excessive materiality and the consumer culture? Are they obscure vanitas symbols? Decorative ornaments? The artist’s “secret language”? Or a (alleged) guise in which the principles of painting are questioned?
