1 Picture in CaféCult #61

Johanna Binder
26.930

Opening: September 25, 2013, 7 p.m.

As part of the exhibition series in CaféCult #61 Johanna Binder is showing 26,930.

26,930 is a series of two pictures that deal with the surface that bears the image, where the painting takes place. Assuming that a painted surface is composed of the sum of strokes and lines, which are generated by a tight sequence of dots, Johanna Binder attempts to measure the surface of the image with rows of dots. The two exhibited works only show a fragment of the possibilities, because the number of dot sizes usable for the measurement is infinite.

Johanna Binder deals with the formal properties of painting in her work. Borrowing from Clement Greenberg’s art criticism, she forgoes external references and restricts herself to the specific properties of the medium in the artistic analysis. Here the artist entirely forgoes visual or narrative elements and concentrates on painting and its material basis as thematic content. In order to be able to collect and analyze the medium’s conditions and components, they are often handled separately to then be able to reconnect and relocate them.

Johanna Binder, born in 1985 in Salzburg, lives and works in Salzburg. From 2006-2007 she studied painting under Ursula Hübner at the University of Arts and Industrial Design in Linz, from 2007-2013 painting, film animation, and tapestry under Christian Attersee and Judith Eisler at the University for Applied Art in Vienna. In 2013 she founded the Salzburg project space RoN. Her works were last shown in the solo show Tragflächen at Herminengasse 1 (2013), Vienna and in The Essence in the Künstlerhaus Wien (2013). www.johannabinder.at
