1 Picture in Café

Nadia El-Ayachi
beziehungsweise

Opening: December 5, 2012, 8 p.m.

Nadia El-Ayachi is showing her new work, beziehungsweise, in the CaféCult #57 exhibition series.

Nadia El-Ayachi’s latest work, beziehungsweise, was inspired by a stack love letters she discovered by chance. Quotes were taken from letters that a young woman wrote to her boyfriend, which he meticulously collected and “disposed of” after almost 20 years. These quotes are combined with graphite drawings that depict people lost in thought. On a textual and pictorial level the relationships are characterized by lust, misunderstandings, and emptiness. The story tells of imperfections and superfluities. Too little appreciation and touch are side by side with too much reservation and devotion.

beziehungsweise cites longing, pleas, mutual dependencies, doubt, and the pursuit of happiness. The artist looks at interpersonal relationships, needs, and compensations, while critically challenging their (in)dependence.

Nadia El-Ayachi, born in 1986 in Hallein, lives and works in Salzburg. From 2005-2012 she studied art and craft education in the painting (Dieter Kleinpeter) and graphic design (Beate Terfloth) departments at Mozarteum University. She was a finalist for the Ö1 talent scholarship in 2012. Her work was recently exhibited in the gap solo show in Das Zimmer gallery in Salzburg.
