October Talks: Book presentation
Materialism by Terry Eagleton

Tu, 16 October 2018, 7pm

World-renowned author, critic and theorist Terry Eagleton comes to the Salzburger Kunstverein to present his latest book “Materialism,” now also available in German.

In this stimulating analysis of a fascinating school of philosophy, Terry Eagleton makes a powerful argument that materialism is at the center of today’s important scientific and cultural as well as philosophical debates. The author reveals entirely fresh ways of considering the values and beliefs of three very different materialists—Marx, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein—drawing striking comparisons between their philosophies while reflecting on a wide array of topics, from ideology and history to language, ethics, and the aesthetic. Cogently demonstrating how it is our bodies and corporeal activity that make thought and consciousness possible, Eagleton’s book is a valuable exposition on philosophic thought that strikes to the heart of how we think about ourselves and live in the world. Terry Eagleton will present a lecture on this very topic that his book espouses.

Terry Eagleton is currently Distinguished Professor of English Literature at Lancaster University. Eagleton has published over fifty books spanning the fields of literary theory, postmodernism, politics, ideology and religion, including the seminal Literary Theory: An Introduction (1983), which has sold over 750,000 copies. The work elucidated the emerging literary theory of the period. He has also been a prominent critic of postmodernism, publishing works such as The Illusions of Postmodernism (1996).

His most recent books, including Reason, Faith, and Revolution: Reflections on the God Debate (2009), On Evil (2010), Why Marx Was Right (2011), Culture and the Death of God (2014), Hope Without Optimism (2015), Materialism (2016), and Culture (2016) are all printed by Yale University.

There will be a bookstall by Rupertusbuchhandlung.
