On unholy and forbidden images. Aniconism and media images in Islam
A lecture by Dorna Safaian

An event from Mozarteum University, Department of Fine Arts, Art and Craft Education in cooperation with the Salzburger Kunstverein.

Tuesday, April 9, 2013, 7 p.m.

Although it is well known that there is a ban on images in Islam, this does not apply to videos, photographs, and other media images. Painting a figure is condemned by legal scholars, while photographing the same object is usually permitted. Dorna Safaian’s lecture traced the reasons behind this (apparent) contradiction and, in doing so, explored the roots of Islamic image theology. In this context insights into the foundations of Islam were also discussed, such as the sources of the law and the prophetology.

Dorna Safaian lives and works in Berlin.
