Exhibition at Café Cult #47

Petra Polli
Code

Opening: December 8, 2010, 7 p.m.

As part of the exhibition series at CaféCult #47
Petra Polli was presenting recent works.

Petra Polli works with news and the encoding of it in both her paintings and installations. In her most recent series, she deals with current political news, the key words of which she encodes using the Caesarian encryption method. The viewer must first decode the words in order to understand the content. In this work, Ms. Polli refers to the latest development in the field of QR Codes. These are two-dimensional barcodes containing information that can be accessed using special software.

Ms. Polli’s artwork addresses ciphers and their significance. Who can retrieve these codes? To whom are they accessible? What information are we denied without access? The major focus here is on issues of power or exclusion from it, but also denial of information.

Encryption code: X=3 (The sequence of letters in the alphabet is shifted forward three places, so that D becomes A.)

Petra Polli, born in 1976 in Bolzano, lives and works in Leipzig. Petra Polli studied painting under Prof. Dieter Kleinpeter at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg from 2002-2007 and painting and graphic design under Prof. Annette Schröder at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig from 2008-2010. In 2009 and 2010 Ms. Polli was an assistant in painting (2009 Rebekka Morris/2010 Monika Baer) at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg. She has recently participated in the exhibitions “CHINCHONA” in Das Zimmer Gallery in Salzburg and “NOLPDJSIHO,” the degree show at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig.
