Exhibition at Café Cult #43

Martina Mühlfellner

Opening: February 3, 2010, 7 p.m.

Martina Mühlfellner studied contemporary jewelry design at Alchimia in Florence and has been successfully working with this medium since then (e.g. 2007 winner of the Eligius-
Schmuck Award from the state of Salzburg, extensive exhibition work). Since the beginning of 2009 she has been increasingly dedicating her energy to drawing. The large format subjects are done in India ink on paper.

As part of the exhibition series in CaféCult #43, Martina Mühlfellner was presenting pieces form the series “I love my bombs – My sweet and cozy bombs” and “Gescheiterte Protest- und/oder Integrationsversuche” (Failed attempts at protest and/or integration). People in silver or gold bunny costumes could be seen, along with a bomb that was trivialized with a plush coat.

Fur/plush is comfy/cozy, woolly/warm, while being dusty/musty...it’s easy to hide or dress up in it. (Martina Mühlfellner)

Integration problems do not only exist, as is commonly thought, on a cultural level. On an interpersonal level you also have to decide again and again how far to go, how much to adapt or follow your own path, while maintaining your individuality and identity. Is it at all possible to defy certain social norms? Which survival strategies does one develop and what boundaries do people draw for themselves? Martina Mühlfellner attempted to present and create an awareness of these problems in her work.

Martina Mühlfellner, born in 1977 in Salzburg, lives and works in Salzburg.
Martina Mühlfellner studied at Alchimia (school of contemporary jewelry design) in Florence from 2000-2004, where she then taught until 2006. From 2006-2008 she completed her MAS at the Intitut für Kulturmanagement in Vienna. She recently participated in the following exhibitions: “JCE (Le réseau de la Jeune Création Européenne),” Montrouge, “Traklhaus,”
Galerie im Traklhaus, Salzburg and “Alchemic Experiences,” Shenkar College, Tel Aviv.
