SOUND SYSTEMS is the title of an exhibition which was on view in the Salzburg Kunstverein from 14 August to 12 October 2003 showing how music and sound can influence design in contemporary fine art and. Edek Bartz and Hildegund Amanshauser are the curators — the spectrum of the exhibition ranges from classical music to electronic sound systems. All works have in common the medium and sculptural material: music and sound. There is great variation in each artist’s aesthetic approach and method. In some cases noise or music are part of the artistic work or in others the artists concentrate on specific pieces of music. The artists are concerned with the system of music, with the question of performance and the setting where people listen to music (Joachim Koester), with ”music“ as produced by insects (Henrik Hakansson) and with the visualisation of images that can be created when listening to music (Kai Kaljo). The exhibition attempts to explore the relationship between listening and looking, listening and experiencing a spatial area.

SOUND SYSTEMS contrasts two main themes: on the one hand the preoccupation with classical music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Richard Wagner, and on the other the ”sound system“ — indispensable at raves, DJ lines, rock and pop events — and seen as an object full of symbolism, suggesting sensuously intoxicating totality, menace and monstrosity.
