Ene-Liis Semper

Opening: 11 June, 7 p.m.
Presenter: Johannes Saar, Critic, Tallinn

In her videos Ene-Liis Semper explores border situations of existence. She tries to end her life by shooting or hanging herself but as it is a video loop, FF/Rew (1998), shortly after it comes to an end it starts again from the beginning. In Oasis (1999) she fills her mouth with earth in which she plants a flower. Licked Room (2000) shows how the artist literally licked a room. Bodies, space, the definition of a subject, border experiences: Ene-Liis Semper takes up classical questions of the 1970s again in her own very individual and contemporary way and continues them on a current level of discourse.

Ene-Liis Semper, born in 1969, is one of the stars of the Estonian artistic scene of the 1990s. She represented Estonia at the Venice Biennial in 2001 where she attracted great international attention.
